Raised by her grandmother Mary Emma Handshaw Velsor; graduated from Huntington High School, Class of 1936; excelled in Latin in high school; during WWII she worked at Grumman Aircraft in Bethpage, Nassau County, making airplanes for the Navy; for many years after WWII she worked at Marine Model at Halestine {Huntington Harbor}, making small parts for scale-model kits of historic sailing ships; lived with her sister Marian Roberts & Marian's family; she was a Civil War scholar; she had an extensive pen-pal relationship with people overseas, especially in England; some of these relationships lasted close to 50 years; she was a stamp collector; her collection of WWII-era covers censored by the British, the Americans, the Nazis & others was quite remarkable; had a great love of reading and poetry, which she tried to pass on to her nephew; a quiet but remarkable woman; she died from cancer at Huntington Hospital.
