Obituary
Long Islander
Seldom it is that man lives beyond the three score year and ten mark and closes his eyes in death in death in the village of his nativity, after passing most of his life in a sister village, but this happened Monday morning when Andrew Van Sise passed away in Woodbury after a long illness which he bore with patience. He was born in Woodbury 87 years ago, the son of James Van Sise and Orphelia Ketcham. When a young man he purchased a farm in Syosset just west of the St. Angels Home, where he successfully tilled the soil. He was also a clever butcher, but had not practiced the trade for several years. Mr. Van Sise was twice married, and of the first union a daughter was born, Mrs. Emma Payne, who resides in Los Angeles, C.A. Later he married Miss Sarah Lewis, of East Norwich, and to them were born one daughter, Martha B., wife of George W. Jackson, of this village, and three sons, William, who passed away some time ago, Andrew, of Freehold, N.J., and S. Francis, of Woodbury. When the children left the homestead to make homes of their own, Mr. & Mrs. Van Sise took into their home a little girl, Miss Alice Glynn, who they reared and later became the wife of George Schaaf, of Hicksville. Owing to failing health, several months ago, the couple decided to leave their homestead, and took up their residence in the house of their son, S. Francis, which adjoins his residence, and it was here Mr. Van Sise spent his sunset days in the village of his nativity, on the Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury. Besides Mrs. Van Sise and his children, he leaves several grandchildren. His popularity in the community was attested by the large floral tribute and gathering of friends at the funeral services which were held at the home of his son Francis, at which the Rev. Arthur Brown, pastor of the Woodbury Methodist Church, officiated. Interment was in the Huntington Rural Cemetery.
