Thomas W. Currie Jr. died at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas on November 7. A memorial service was held at North Park Church of Dallas on November 10 with the Rev. Stephen W. Plunkett officiating.
Born in Austin, Texas, he was educated in the public schools there as well as the Choate School in Wallingford, Conn. He was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and subsequently received a B.D. from Union Theological Seminary of New York and degrees from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (M.Th.) and Union Theological Seminary of Virginia (Th.D.).

Pastorates included Ridglea Church in Ft. Worth, Oak Cliff Church in Dallas, St. Paul Church in Houston. In 1963, he became the Executive Secretary for Church Extension for Brazos Presbytery (the Houston area), where he was responsible for starting several new congregations. He was "honorably retired" by Grace Presbytery in 1983.
He was the author of several books: Great Protestant Leaders (with his wife, Alison), Our Cities for Christ, The History of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (75th Anniversary edition), On the Right Side of the Trinity (a history of Oak Cliff Presbyterian Church), and several collections of sermons and devotions.
In July of 1998 his wife of 58 years, Alison (Harrison) died. Subsequently he married Eleanor Files Daniel, who, along with his sister, Bettie Currie, survives him. He is also survived by his five children and their spouses: Elizabeth Currie Williams; Alison Currie Meier and her husband, Dieter Meier; Thomas White Currie III and his wife, Peggy; Margaret Currie Plunkett and her husband, Stephen W. Plunkett; and James Stuart Currie and his wife, Jo Ann. Other survivors are 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
His son, James, is associate dean of the Houston Extension Program and assistant professor of American church history at Austin (Texas) Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and his son, Thomas, is dean of Union Theological Seminary-PSCE at Charlotte (N.C.) and professor of theology.
