Obituary
Joseph A. Bemis died very suddenly Tuesday night, September 17, at his home two miles north of this village. He had been in poor health for the past years and was apparently no worse the day of his death. Mr. Bemis was born in 1833, in the town of Ellisburg. In 1857 he was married to Ophelia L. Holley, daughter of the late David Holley, and located on Mr. Holley's farm; which he carried on until his death. He had one son Henry H who died in 1882, and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Ely of New York, who was with him when the end came, and Mrs. W. E. Forman , of Utica, who was very sick and unable to be present, and one, brother, Monroe Bemis, of Adams.

Mr. Bemis was a devoted member of Zion church and was confirmed in 1859 by Bishop Whipple, whose death occurred about the same time and whose funeral was being held at the same hour of Mr. Bemis'. He was a regular attendant at church and an ardent worker. He Was vestryman for many years and after the death of David Holley took the office of senior warden which he held till his death. He was a loving husband and father and the family have much sympathy extended to them.

The funeral was held at Zion church, Rev, Brockway officiating in a very impressive and feeling manner. The music was good and appropriate, the quartette consisting of Mrs. A. J. Brockway, Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Huggins and Frank Russell, of Adams. He was layed to rest in the family lot in the yard of the church he had loved and worked in for so many years, by the eight vestrymen of the church. Funeral Director Larned had charge of the funeral. Those from out Of town who were present: were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Elv. of New York; W. E. Forman, Utica; Mrs. Iugraham. of Watertown; Mr, and Mrs. L D. Rounds, Mr. and Mrs. Ely, George Ely, Mr., and Mrs. Joe Rounds, Lacona; Mrs. Monroe Bemis and daughters, of Adams; A. A. Wheeler, of Mannsville,:and several members of the Adams grange of which the deceased was a prominent member.
