Clair L. Payne
Clair L. Payne, M.D., passed away at his home on June 16, 2000, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 5, 1919, in Richfield, Utah to Conrad C. and DeLora Payne.

After graduating from North Sevier High School, he attended Utah State Agricultural College where he met his future wife, Ruth Richards. His studies were interrupted by four years of service in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, Clair and Ruth were married in the Logan Temple on March 26, 1946. Dr. Payne graduated from USAC in 1946 and entered medical school at St. Louis University, where he graduated in 1950. He completed an internship at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City in 1951. He and Ruth then returned to Logan, where he began a practice in general and family medicine. He continued practicing for 39 years, retiring in 1990. During his years of practice, he pioneered several new and innovative therapies and was a positive mentor to other physicians who moved into the valley.

Dr. Payne loved and was loved by his patients. He especially enjoyed the children. He delivered more than 5,000 babies, and took care of many of them up to and into adulthood. He will be remembered for his listening ear, his caring nature, and his helpful advice, as well as his expert medical service.

He loved to hunt, golf and fish, and was an avid fly fisherman. He particularly enjoyed these activities with his friends, children, and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, who passed away earlier this year. He is survived by his four children, Brent Payne (Ginny), Burley, Idaho; Marianna Larsen (John), North Logan; John Payne (Fran), Nibley; and Kathy Bylund (Steve), Boise, Idaho; as well as 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Dean Payne (Darlene), Salt Lake City; V. Kent Payne (Helen), Lethbridge, Alberta; and Weldon Payne (Colleen), Taylorsville; and by his sister Varna Graham (James), Salt Lake City.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, June 19, at the Logan 24th Ward, 1250 N. 1600 East, Logan. Friends may call at the Allen-Hall Mortuary on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Logan Cemetery.
