Harvey Daniel Johnson was named for his two grandfathers: William Harvey Kier and Daniel Johnson.
He was born in Yates Center, Woodson County, Kansas. His family ran a pharmacy and music store as well as farming. His family moved to Indian Territory around 1900 and farmed in Payne County, Oklahoma before moving to Okemah, Oklahoma around 1904 where his parents operated a furniture store and a hotel. His family had a disaster in 1910 when his father was bitten by a copperhead snake and died. Harvey joined the military in 1917.
He and his 3 brothers all participated in WWI.
He married Naomi around 1925. He had one daughter named Colleen.
