Son of David Hayden and Elizabeth (Emmons) Foster.
Born: February 13, 1850 in Lima, Ohio.
Died: 1940 in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
Census: 1850 - German Township, Allen County, Ohio.
Military Service: In 1862 and 1863, Sylvanus ran more than once, and was finally admitted, at age 13, to Company D of the 151st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as a fifer. He was active the the GAR for fifty years, and in 1938 was the oldest living Civil War veteran in Jefferson County.
Occupation: Cabinet Maker.
Married: (1) Matilda Reeves Davis January 2, 1870 in Graysville, Illinois.
