On several occasions after their marriage, Carrie and Lee were separated for a week at a time. About 1911, Lee left for good and joined the army. After that he had essentially no contact with his children and did nothing to support them. Lee was stationed in El Paso, and retired a Colonel in Washington, DC.

After the final separation, Carrie studied and became a nurse in order to support her children. Her sister Sarah encouraged Carrie to move near her in Fort Wayne, Indiana; after Carrie moved the two fought constantly. Carrie's daughter lived next door to her, but died in 1968. Carrie then moved in with her granddaughter, Ann Ward (Bouillet) Eisinger in Maryland and lived there until she died.

On 3 Aug 1889, Josiah and Anne & children Lewis, Irvine, Isaac, Mabel, Sarah, Wilford & Carrie were granted a certificate transferring their membership to Platte Valley Monthly Meeting, Merrick County, Nebraska, from Spring Creek Monthly Meeting, Mahaska County, Iowa. Josiah went broke in Nebraska. He moved back to Iowa and worked with a grain mill at Kalona, Iowa. When the mill burned down he moved to Washington, Iowa, where he dealt in livestock.
