Obituary
Marie was born in San Francisco , California in 1912 to Victorine (Dolly) Douarin and Daniel (Doc) Williams. Her father was mayor of Sunnyvale and she spent part of her first years there. During the First World War, her parents moved to Blue Lake where her mother had been raised as part of one of the French pioneer families who founded the little community near Arcata, Ca. Her parents separated and Marie spent her childhood and adolescence sharing time between the two. Her father Doc Williams founded the little community of Salyer on the Trinity River near Willow Creek and he and Marie ran a tent store and campground there through the mid twenties and thirties. She graduated from Arcata Union High School in 1929 where she excelled in tennis, English and Drama. She then attended Business College in Eureka , Ca. She worked as a librarian prior to her marriage to Walter Whitson in 1934. That union, though ending in divorce, produced a daughter, Diane Douarin, in 1935. Marie moved to Sacramento , where she worked for the state welfare office as a stenographer. She married Clarence McCullough in 1939. She gave birth to her second daughter, Sheila Marie, in 1942. Clarence was tragically killed in a trucking accident on the Yolo Causeway in 1944. Marie met and married Frederick R. Lauson, a U.S. Army officer in 1945. Marie moved east to Illinois during World War II to be near her husbands family while he was stationed in France . Upon his return from overseas service, Frederick adopted Maries daughters and the family moved to Tolono , Illinois . Marie sold Avon cosmetics and Fred owned and operated a Union 76 Service Station and became a Police Officer in Champaign-Urbana. Marie worked as a stenographer for a publishing company (Girard Press) and a secretary for a bakery (Dormans) in Champaign , Illinois . She gave birth there to a son, Richard, in 1951. In 1957, the Lausons moved to Paradise , California . Marie and Fred found several odd jobs (she worked in the apple orchards and at Horners Dept. Store and as a legal secretary) until she became a secretary at The State Department of Human Resources and Fred became an automotive technician at Chico State University . After Fred passed away, Marie retired and she bought The Nearly New Shop in 1975. She owned and operated the recycled clothing store until she sold it to her daughter Sheila in 1982. Sheila preceded her mother in death in 2004. Marie enjoyed travel abroad to such locales as Mexico , Thailand and England and sailing on several pleasure cruises, one of which included a trip through the Panama Canal with her loving companion Hal Knoerle. Marie loved to read and to entertain. She enjoyed dancing and playing card games. Pinochle and cribbage were two of her favorites and she excelled at Scrabble. Since 2008, she resided at an assisted living facility, Sunshine Cottage, in Paradise California , where she made many dear friends amongst the residents and caring staff. Marie is survived by her daughter Diane D. Breitenfeldt (Dr. Dorvan) of Cheney , Washington and her son Richard Dwight Lauson, of Paradise . Marie leaves four cherished grandchildren: Lisa Strickler (Floyd), Julie Hoage (Michael), Marc Andrews ( Sandy ) and Scott Andrews (Mary Mae Hardt), seven great grandchildren, and four great-greats. Her many friends through the years have commented on her sense of humor, youthful outlook and zest for life. She celebrated her hundredth birthday on January 17th, 2012 . No service is planned at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maries memory to her favorite local non-profit organizations: Theatre on the Ridge and T.O.P.Cats (feline trap, neuter & release program).
