Son of Walter and Louisa (Van Velsor) Whitman, Sr.
Born: March 2, 1818 in West Hills, Huntington Township, Suffolk, New York.
Died: March 21, 1870 in Unknown.

He was named after his paternal grandfather, a militiaman during the Revolutionary War. He was sustained by temporary jobs at the Brooklyn shipyard not far from the Whitman family residence, but his unstable and deteriorating mental condition, which culminated in a physical attack on family members, eventually forced Walt to have him committed to an insane asylum where he died on March 21, 1870 at the age of 52 from the "rupture of an aneurysm."
