Military Service:
William R. Van Cise enlisted into the 162nd Pennsylvania Volunteers, also known as the 17th Cavalry, on October 3rd, 1862. He was quickly promoted to Sargeant. His unit fought at the Battle of Gettysburg...they fought courageously along with the 6th and 9th NY Cavalries under Col. Thomas C. Devin, and they were one of the earliest units to get a monument there...William's name is one of the names inscribed on it.
